Fat at fifty?

Ok my birthday came and went on April 7th and I am not fit. I guess I am part of the majority so I shouldn't feel bad. I am pretty bummed though as I had great plans to take the torch for the middle-agers and show everyone how easy it is to get fit.
I did not expect to have knee surgery at the end of December 2010 or do the Efudex treatment for skin cancer in January 2011 or get super busy with my job. None of these reasons are good enough to stop me from getting fit.
Knee surgery prevent me from hiking and stair stepping but not for weights and situps.
Efudex prevented me from feeling good about going to the gym and being around people. Could done sit ups and home and went for a walk with my wifey.

Commitment Part 2 of 2

I find commitment is more important as I get older. I will be 50 very soon and I realize that a lot of time has passed and I need to manage my time better if I want to get the things done I want to do alot of things in this life. Staying healthy is vital if I want to feel good, look good, and have energy.

What will be different today? Three things.
1. I am going to print out the commitment quote and read it three times a day.
2. I will write my fitness commitment down today and read it three times a day.
3. I will commit to a specific time each day that I will exercise. I will put the time in my Outlook Calendar.

Are you commited? What will you do differently today? Do it today!

Are you truly commited to getting fit? Part 1 of 2

I know you say you want to get in shape and get fit. I say it too and I know what to do. I worked in a gym and my wife and I did the Bill Philips' EAS Body for Life Couples contest and took second in the country. I should be in great shape. I have not been truly commited for some time. I say I am, but my actions are a different story. I forget how powerful true commitment is.

This is my favorite quote. I have always understood it to be attributed to Goethe, Germany's Shakespeare, but it turns out it was a Scottish Mountaineer. No wonder I love this quote. I love hiking and I'm Scottish.
This quote is so powerful. I encourage you to read it several times and think how it could change your life. Commitment is the key. It has always been so.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way"

The “Until one is committed...” quotation often attributed to Goethe is in fact by William Hutchinson Murray (1913-1996), from his 1951 book entitled The Scottish Himalayan Expedition.

Are you fit or have you quit yet?

I was at my gym with the wifey for the first time this year. I had knee surgery Dec 29 2009 and did a course of Efudex on my face (Google Efudex photos) and I needed some time to recuperate. Besides who wants to fight the "I am going to get in shape after the holidays crowd".

January is the worst time to exercise for several reasons.
1. It is cold out and who wants to get in a cold car and drive to the gym?
2. You can't even get a seat on the stationary bike or use the treadmill unless you want to wait around for 20 minutes. I want crowds ata Rock concert not the gym.
3. Most people who go to the gym in January really don't want to be there and are not happy. It's way too serious in January.

So all the quitters have quit by now. They gave it their best shot. They went everyday for maybe a week and then they missed the first day the next week, but kept going. The next week they went one day because of their busy schedule and now it's over. They did not make it a month. Besides, they stopped losing weight. Lost 5 pounds first week and then nothing. Failure big time.
Ok maybe they can start next month or maybe April so they can be ready for summer.
Where would you be if you had of stuck it until the end of February? Probably down 10-15 pounds and about 2-3 inches on the waist. Most your friends would have noticed a difference and asked you what you're doing. The sugar craving would be diminished and you would have more energy. You would now feel confortable asking to "work in" with the lughead bodybuilder hogging the lat machine. Your pants would button and maybe even be a little loose. Nothing feels better. Nothing.
Ok quitter! Get back on the horse. It's getting warmer and summer will be here before you know it. Imagine youself in a sundress or a swim suit? If you're a guy, how about some abs finally. This is the year.
For me it is buttoning those pants and having to put on a belt to hold them up. And getting those two suits I got for Christmas two years ago tailored finally!
I won't get to do the hardcore 50 fitness day this year on my April 7th Birthday but I can do alot if I just don't quit. If you quit you will never get fit.

Change is the key to staying fit for a lifetime

Happy New Year! I awoke with a sore knee just two days post surgical and a nasty cold. So much for the my first day of restoring myself to health. I have a secret for getting and staying fit for a lifetime. It is called change. If you do exactly the opposite of what you are doing today to be fit it is likely you will be successful. If you simply change what you are doing right now and incorporate some simple things you will have a great chance of getting in the best shape of your life and remaining that way for a lifetime. Critics will tell you that my plan is too simple and it won't work for most people but I can assure you that most people do not stick with any plan even throught the month of January. They just plain quit. You will not change years of accumulated weight gain in one month. Your first decision must be that you want to change. I will show you what to do but only you can do it. No one will do it for you. Follow me by reading and putting into practice the secrets I will show you. Have an open mind. See you tomorrow!
